Standing as a monumental achievement within the design realm, the D&AD Awards are considered the Everest of industry accolades. To possess a D&AD pencil is to hold a token of envy-worthy stature. Unlike the fleeting glory of typical awards that blaze through social media only to be forgotten, a D&AD pencil is often displayed with pride in the grand foyers of leading design powerhouses.
The elite circle of 2023 D&AD award recipients has been unveiled, highlighting exemplary design, social responsibility in advertising, and superior creative prowess that sets the standard for the industry.
In my journey as a freelance designer, I’ve supplemented many in-house teams and crossed paths with only a select few D&AD pencils—the elusive black pencil remains a treasure I have yet to encounter.
The awards span several esteemed tiers, with the ascending order of wood, graphite, yellow, and the prestigious black. A total of three hundred and ninety-two projects were deemed worthy of a wood pencil, but only two exceptional endeavors were honored with a black pencil. The 2023 accolades include Columbia Records for their visual artistry in Pharrell Williams’ music video Cash In Cash Out and The Swedish Heartchild Foundation for the heartwarming Heartbeat Drum Machine initiative.
The awards also shone a light on passion projects with the Side Hustle category, which allowed individuals to show off creative endeavors undertaken during their personal time, either for charitable causes or personal fulfillment.
